Start Your Day at the Corinth Canal

When you start your journey into Corinth, this historic landmark can’t be missed! The Corinth Canal is a narrow waterway that cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth, connecting the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea, and significantly reducing travel time for ships by avoiding the lengthy journey around the Peloponnese peninsula. Completed in 1893, it is a marvel of engineering, carved through limestone and stretching approximately 4 miles long and only 70 feet wide. Plan for about 10-20 minutes to gaze upon this beauty!
Though constructed long after Paul’s time, this narrow waterway dramatically changed the region’s geography. In ancient times, ships were dragged over the narrow isthmus on a paved road called the Diolkos, which may have been familiar to Paul during his travels.
Archaeological Site of Ancient Corinth

Next, make your way to the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth, the heart of Paul’s ministry in the city. As recorded in Acts 18:1-18, Paul spent 18 months here, teaching the Gospel and establishing a thriving Christian community. Plan 20-40 minutes exploring the ruins. Key highlights to visit include:

The Temple of Apollo: One of the oldest structures on-site, offering a glimpse into the city’s pagan religious practices.
The Bema (Judgment Seat): The location where Paul was brought before Gallio, as mentioned in Acts 18:12-17. Stand here and imagine the Apostle’s defense of his faith.
The Fountain of Peirene: A critical water source in antiquity, where locals and visitors would have gathered.
Take your time exploring the ruins and reflecting on the challenges and triumphs Paul experienced while spreading the Gospel in this cosmopolitan city.
Museum of Ancient Corinth
Before leaving Ancient Corinth, visit the on-site museum to gain deeper insights into the city’s history. Exhibits include artifacts from Paul’s time, such as inscriptions, pottery, and sculptures, which help paint a vivid picture of daily life in this bustling metropolis. Plan to spend around 30 minutes to 1 hour at the museum! Tickets can be purchased upon arrival.

Visit the Acrocorinth
Perched high above the ancient city is the Acrocorinth, a sprawling fortress that has served various purposes throughout history. In Paul’s time, this hill was likely home to temples and shrines dedicated to Greek gods, including Aphrodite. Though the specific structures from Paul’s era no longer remain, the site’s commanding views and historical significance make it a must-visit.

Hike to the top for panoramic views of the Corinthian landscape and imagine the diverse cultural and religious influences that shaped the city’s character.
Tickets can be purchased at site, be sure to plan your day accordingly as the site is only open 8:30-3:30 and closed on certain days depending on time of year.
Conclude in Modern Corinth
End your day in Modern Corinth, a lively town that offers a stark contrast to the ruins you’ve explored. Stroll through its streets, browse local shops for unique souvenirs, and enjoy a meal at a traditional taverna or a modern place to dine. This is the perfect place to unwind and reflect on your journey through Biblical and historical Corinth.

Be sure to top by my favorite coffee shops, Brew Mates for either a traditional Greek Freddo Cappuccino or an expertly crafted latte!
